Kola Potash Project Livelihood Restoration Plan

Africawide Consulting prepared a Livelihood Restoration Plan (LRP) as part of the overarching Resettlement Action Plan (RAP) for the Sintoukola Potash Project in the Republic of Congo. The study relates to the proposed development of an underground mine, process plant, export facilities and associated infrastructure. The primary livelihoods adopted by households in the resettlement-affected villages are agricultural cropping or crop farming, fishing, hunting, charcoal production and natural resource harvesting (drinking water, firewood, wood sawing, nuts, Mfoumbou and Marantaceae leaves).

Work on this project included:

• A review of work previously undertaken
• Extensive stakeholder engagement
• An updated social baseline assessment
• A livelihoods assessment, including local farming strategies and practices, yields and input costs
• Market assessments to determine market prices and inform compensation rates
• Development of an eligibility framework and associated entitlement matrix
• Formulation of a livelihood restoration and development plan
• A review of the government asset survey and compensation process and rates provided against a set of calculated compensation rates in line with IFC principles.

All work was undertaken in a consultative stakeholder engagement manner in line with IFC PS5 and international best practice principles.
